Roof Rack

This roof rack is made from plywood and foam scraps to hold three kayaks:

Modeled after commercially-sold 'J' style racks.

Plywood, epoxy and stainless steel wingnuts.

 

 

 


After using the roof rack a few times, I strengthened the plywood cross-pieces with fiberglass.  If I were to make another roof rack, I would make the base of each 'J' piece thinner to save weight, as there is not much stress on it.

The bow line is tied to webbing loops bolted underneath the hood.Bow-Attachment The bow line is attached to the car on webbing loops that were bolted to the car using existing bolts at the edge of the hood.  No more searching under the vehicle for good tie-down places!
